Outline of This Week's Sermon: April 27, 2008

HUMILITY PRACTICED IN THE WORKPLACE
By Pastor Jim Rider
Eph 6:5-9 - Slaves, be obedient to those who are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in the sincerity of your heart, as to Christ;
6 - not by way of eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart.
7 - With good will render service, as to the Lord, and not to men,
8 - knowing that whatever good thing each one does, this he will receive back from the Lord, whether slave or free.
9 - And, masters, do the same things to them, and give up threatening, knowing that both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no partiality with Him.
OLD TESTAMENT EXAMPLES:
1. Joseph
Gen 39:21 - But the LORD was with Joseph and extended kindness to him, and gave him favor in the sight of the chief jailer.
2. Daniel
Dan 1:9 - Now God granted Daniel favor and compassion in the sight of the commander of the officials,
NEW TESTAMENT EXAMPLES:
1. Jesus
Luke 23:4,13 - And Pilate said to the chief priests and the multitudes, "I find no guilt in this man."
13 - And Pilate summoned the chief priests and the rulers and the people,
2. Philemon
Philem 17-20 - If then you regard me a partner, accept him as you would me.
18 - But if he has wronged you in any way, or owes you anything, charge that to my account;
19 - I, Paul, am writing this with my own hand, I will repay it (lest I should mention to you that you owe to me even your own self as well).
20 - Yes, brother, let me benefit from you in the Lord; refresh my heart in Christ.
A. Principles of Serving
1. Serving Christ from the Heart
Eph 6:6-7 - not by way of eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart.
7 - With good will render service, as to the Lord, and not to men,
Col 3:23 - Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men,
2. Honor Your Employer
1 Tim 6:1-2 - Let all who are under the yoke as slaves regard their own masters as worthy of all honor so that the name of God and our doctrine may not be spoken against.
2 - And let those who have believers as their masters not be disrespectful to them because they are brethren, but let them serve them all the more, because those who partake of the benefit are believers and beloved. Teach and preach these principles.
1 Peter 2:18 - Servants, be submissive to your masters with all respect, not only to those who are good and gentle, but also to those who are unreasonable.
3. Don't be a Trouble Maker
Titus 2:9 - Urge bondslaves to be subject to their own masters in everything, to be well-pleasing, not argumentative,
4. Don't Steal
B. Principles of Leading
1. Serve Christ from the Heart
Eph 6:6 - not by way of eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart.
1 Cor 10:31-33 - Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
32 - Give no offense either to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God;
33 - just as I also please all men in all things, not seeking my own profit, but the profit of the many, that they may be saved.
2. Don't Abuse Those Under Your Care
Eph 6:9 - And, masters, do the same things to them, and give up threatening, knowing that both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no partiality with Him.
3. Be Just and Fair
Col 4:1 - Masters, grant to your slaves justice and fairness, knowing that you too have a Master in heaven.
C. Summary
1. Both Employee and Employer are Serving Christ
2. Both Employee and Employer will be Held Accountable By Christ
3. Ultimate Purpose is to Glorify God in Everything We Do
